Krabi International Airport recently announced its second expansion in five years
OCEM Airfield Technology is supplying a full AGL system to one of Thailand’s fastest-growing airports serving the country’s popular southwest coast.
The Italian company is providing CCRs, runway inset lights, flashing lights and wingbars to Krabi International Airport, a major tourist destination across the Phang Nga Bay from Phuket.
Between 2012 and 2015, Krabi’s air traffic increased from about 1.19 million passengers to almost 3.69 million annually thanks to an airport expansion project.
This year a second expansion was announced to accommodate an additional 2 million passengers each year and to help manage spillover from nearby Phuket International Airport.
Thailand poses particular challenges for airfields due to its tropical climate. Krabi experiences a wet season from May to November and can sustain heavy rainfall for days at a time during monsoons.
This makes its airfield lighting signals particularly susceptible to flooding.
OCEM protects against flooding by incorporating a shallow base and three gaskets, which provide triple protection to prevent water from leaking into the lighting signals.
The company has many years of experience accommodating extreme weather and, as its success in Thailand shows, is the ideal partner for airports experiencing difficult climates.
